Overview
BeReal turned a daily phone notification into a shared moment. Users had two minutes to take a photo with the front and rear cameras, and they needed to post before seeing friends' pictures. The constraint gave people a reason to contribute rather than only browse. [1]
The French app surged among younger users in 2022. Voodoo acquired it in June 2024 in a transaction valuing BeReal at €500 million, and the app continued under its new owner. The transaction is an acquisition, not evidence that the product shut down. [2]
Founding Story
Former GoPro employee Alexis Barreyat launched BeReal in December 2019. Contemporary publications also describe Kévin Perreau as a founder, as does investor Accel. In 2021 Barreyat disputed that designation; a company spokesperson later said Perreau could be called a co-founder. [5] [3] [4]
The product asked a different question from a polished profile: what are friends doing now? Its random prompt and two-camera capture lowered the time available to stage and edit a post. That did not make every picture spontaneous; a user could still post late. The design made the timing visible instead of pretending to enforce authenticity. [1]
Timeline
- December 2019: BeReal launched in France. [3]
- June 2021: Andreessen Horowitz and Accel co-led a reported $30 million Series A. [6]
- 2022: The app spread on campuses and won Apple's iPhone App of the Year award. An ambassador program also paid students to promote it. [2] [3]
- June 2024: Voodoo announced it had acquired BeReal in a transaction valuing it at €500 million. It reported more than 40 million active users, without defining the period in the announcement. [2]
- 2025: Voodoo introduced advertising and expanded features including video and chat. [7]
- 2026: Voodoo reported €30 million of 2025 BeReal revenue and described a path to profitability by 2027. That is the owner's account and forecast, not independently audited product-level results. [8]
What They Built
The early experience centered on one notification at an unpredictable time each day. A person captured a front-camera selfie and a rear-camera view, then shared the combined post. Posts made after the two-minute window were marked late. Friends' posts became available after the user contributed their own. [1]
This mechanism tied the value of the feed to participation. A person could not simply consume the day's posts without adding one. It also created a coordination problem: the feed was most interesting when friends took part. Growth therefore depended on groups joining and returning, not just individual installs.
Early users could react with their own photos. Over time the product added more ways to communicate and post, while Voodoo added advertising. More features can make an app useful between prompts, but they also make the original simple promise harder to maintain. [1] [7]
Market Position
Target Customers
BeReal appealed to people who wanted a lightweight way to keep up with close friends. College communities helped spread the app because a photo could introduce the product to everyone in the room. Its early popularity among younger users did not prove that every age group would develop the same habit. [1] [3]
Market Size
Photo sharing is part of a large social-media market, but a broad count of social users is not a reliable estimate of people who would join a daily reciprocal photo feed. BeReal's own eligible market and paid customer economics were not disclosed in the sources reviewed.
Competition
Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok offered existing social graphs and larger sets of communication tools. Competing services also experimented with prompted or dual-camera formats. BeReal's advantage was the combination of a shared prompt, reciprocal viewing and a focused friend network, rather than exclusive ownership of any single camera feature. [3] [9]
Business Model
BeReal initially concentrated on adoption rather than a disclosed advertising business. Voodoo later introduced ads. In its 2026 review, Voodoo said BeReal produced €30 million in 2025 revenue, compared with zero at acquisition, and targeted profitability in 2027. Revenue does not establish profit or disclose the cost of acquiring and retaining users. [7] [8]
The commercial tension is direct: ads must fund a service whose appeal came partly from a less curated, less commercial feed. A successful model would need to fit advertising around the shared daily ritual without making the ritual feel like an obligation.
Traction
Voodoo said more than 40 million people were active at acquisition and half used the app at least six days a week. The announcement did not define the active-user period, so the figure should not be treated as daily users. Third-party estimates and company disclosures use different measurement methods; they should not be combined as a single continuous series. [2]
Outcome and evolution
Voodoo completed the acquisition in 2024 and kept the app operating. Its new team sought to improve the product and develop advertising revenue. In 2026 Voodoo reported a stabilized French audience and growth in Japan, while presenting profitability as a future goal. These claims describe a transition under new ownership, not proof that the original business was profitable. [2] [8]
Key Lessons
- A constraint can make contribution easier. The daily prompt gave friends a shared reason to post and a clear moment to return.
- A social habit belongs to a group. Individual downloads matter less when the feed requires friends to participate too.
- Growth and economics answer different questions. An audience and a purchase price do not disclose retention costs, ad yield or profit.
- A product promise affects its business model. Ads and new features can fund the service, but they must fit the behavior that attracted users.
