Overview
Gorillas promised groceries within minutes, using small urban warehouses and bicycle couriers. Founded in Berlin in 2020, it expanded quickly enough to attract a near-$1 billion financing round in October 2021. The investor announcement specified a $2.1 billion pre-money valuation, before the new capital. Delivery Hero announcement
Getir acquired the business in December 2022 for a reported $1.2 billion. The sale ended Gorillas’ independence after a period of retrenchment. The original branded service later disappeared as Getir withdrew from its expansion markets. A German adviser documented the national business’s 2024 wind-down. Founding Story
The founders included Kağan Sümer, Jörg Kattner, and Ronny Shibley, according to Getir investor Flat Capital’s acquisition announcement. Sümer supplied the public account of the initial idea: a familiar neighborhood service made fast through a phone. In an OMR interview summary, he recalled his mother requesting groceries from a nearby kiosk and lowering a basket from the window. His Berlin experiment began with shelves in his living room and help building a marketplace. Flat Capital, OMR interview summary
Shibley brought a software background, having started Codefish after leaving Morgan Stanley. Looking back in July 2022, he said, “Everything happened so fast that I didn't even have time to digest.” His university profile also records that he had left Gorillas. This captures the pace of the early business without treating growth as proof of durability. Concordia interview

What They Built
The app sat above an inventory and delivery operation. Nearby warehouses held goods ready for picking, packing, and short courier trips. Gorillas employed its riders, so a larger network also meant responsibility for staffing and the conditions under which orders reached customers. Delivery Hero announcement

Retail partnerships supplied both products and potential customers. Casino’s November 2021 memorandum proposed national and Monoprix brands in Gorillas’ app, followed by Gorillas fulfillment for orders from Monoprix and Franprix platforms. Casino would also take stakes at French and group levels. The announcement described planned arrangements, rather than proving every integration had launched that day. Casino memorandum
Jumbo provides a clearer implementation milestone. Its March 2022 release named eight additional Dutch cities receiving its assortment through Gorillas, after launches in Groningen, Rotterdam, and Tilburg. That distinguishes a signed partnership from an operational product rollout. In June, Casino also extended its cooperation to Frichti following Gorillas’ acquisition of that French business. Market Position
Target Customers
The original customer wanted an immediate top-up shop without visiting a supermarket. OMR’s January 2021 account described a €1.80 delivery charge and an ambition to grow basket sizes. Those were dated operating details, not prices that applied throughout the company’s life. OMR
In a February 2022 interview, Sümer distinguished early customers attracted to the brand from more practical shoppers seeking lower prices and the right assortment. That was the founder’s segmentation, not an independently measured population split. It exposed a difficult expansion problem: the proposition had to reach people with different price expectations. McKinsey interview
Market Size
Pandemic demand made rapid grocery delivery visible, but did not settle how many neighborhoods could support dense warehouse networks. Public expansion and order counts establish use. They do not establish profitable demand at full delivery cost. The reviewed sources do not supply a consistent neighborhood contribution-margin series or a defensible market estimate for Gorillas alone.
Competition
Getir, Flink, and Gopuff offered similar convenience, while supermarkets and meal-delivery platforms supplied alternative routes to groceries. Reuters described courier pay and urban warehouse rent as recurring costs of the model. A short advertised delivery time constrained the geography from which each warehouse could serve orders. Reuters
The work also generated disputes. WIRED’s 2021 reporting documented rider protests and complaints about pay and conditions, alongside company responses. These were reported accounts, not a finding that every complaint had been adjudicated. The disputes show that employment status alone did not resolve operational trust. WIRED
Business Model
Gorillas sold groceries through its own delivery network. In the McKinsey interview, Sümer envisaged a sequence of operating improvements, selective access to investment, and later revenue from brands, partnerships, and customer data. He explicitly said “we need access to capital.” These were plans for how the business might evolve; the interview did not establish that the later revenue streams had already become substantial. Founder interview
By May 2022, the company was narrowing its scope. Grocery Dive reproduced Sümer’s employee letter describing 300 corporate layoffs and a focus on five core markets, which he said generated 90% of revenue. The original letter is no longer accessible at its company URL. Its profitability language described a target, not an audited result. Contemporary account
Traction
Delivery Hero’s October 2021 announcement cited 4.5 million orders over the preceding six months. It also contained differing warehouse counts: over 140 in the main text and over 180 in the company boilerplate. The order figure has a stated period; the warehouse discrepancy remains unresolved. Neither supports a claim about profitable stores or retained customers. Investor announcement
Outcome and evolution
The $1.2 billion reported Getir deal followed difficulty raising new capital. Comparing it with the earlier round requires retaining the pre-money label on the $2.1 billion figure. The transaction was a major retreat from earlier expectations, but the figures do not reveal cash received by each shareholder or total investor recovery. Reuters, Original financing terms
Acquisition did not preserve the service indefinitely. In April 2024, Getir announced withdrawals from Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Contemporary reporting linked those exits to Gorillas’ closure. Getir’s German employment adviser later described the orderly national wind-down and a reduction of over 1,200 staff. That count covers the German operation, including both brands, rather than Gorillas alone. Tech.eu, Adviser record
Key Lessons
- Underwrite the warehouse, not only the app. Short delivery promises bind inventory, labor, rent, and service geography together.
- Separate rollout evidence from partnership announcements. Jumbo’s named-city expansion says more about implementation than a memorandum alone.
- Test demand beyond early enthusiasts. Sümer identified different price expectations before capital became harder to obtain.
- Preserve the measurement’s scope. Pre-money valuations, six-month order totals, and national staff reductions answer different questions.
- Plan the service transition. An acquisition can extend operations without guaranteeing that the brand or customer service will continue.
