Overview
Jams tried to make personal video creation easier without replacing the person on camera. The company, associated with Potrero Labs, was founded by Asad Awan and Hamza Aftab. South Park Commons lists it as a San Francisco consumer company from 2022. In November 2025, its founders announced a move to OpenAI. The official notice says the Jams and Hubble products would sunset, and that not every team member would join. [1] [2] [7]
Start with a conversation
An early user account describes joining a video conversation, talking, and receiving edited clips afterward. Brandon McGraw used Jams for a conversation with Chien-Ying Yu about leaving established careers to build something new. He described a recording experience comparable in simplicity to a video call, followed by automatic editing and clip selection. He also described a free waitlist with direct support from the team. This is one participant's account, not a measured retention study. [5]
The product decision reduced two separate burdens: recording a useful conversation and turning it into something shareable. That is a more specific job than generating arbitrary video from a prompt. It also gave people a reason to bring another person into the workflow. Whether this invitation behavior created repeat usage is not established by the public record.
Google Cloud later profiled Jams as an AI-first video social network. It described Gemini 2.5 Pro for script creation, multimodal Gemini for video analysis, and Veo 3 for backgrounds, supporting footage, and audio. This documents an application combining several models behind a simple interface. It does not support a claim that Jams trained a proprietary foundation model. [4]
Aftab's product posts emphasized preserving a user's personal touch while avoiding the need to become skilled at prompting. Awan's private-beta announcement similarly positioned video creation around authentic expression. Together with the early user account, these statements show a consistent intended benefit: help people publish their own ideas with less editing effort. They establish positioning more clearly than they establish willingness to pay. [9] [6]
Investors backed the team across borders
Indus Valley Capital founder Aatif Awan said the firm participated in a seed round led by a16z in 2022. He described Jams as its first investment under a model of smaller participating checks in Pakistani founders building global products, especially in the United States. At the OpenAI announcement, he called Jams the firm's first exit. The founders' prior Meta work on creator and monetization products gave them relevant experience; the post does not establish that this background caused the deal. [3]
The investor account explains why a San Francisco startup appeared prominently in Pakistan's startup coverage. It describes the founders' origin and the fund's investment strategy, rather than proving that the product depended on a Pakistan-only customer market. No reviewed source discloses the acquisition consideration or investor return multiple. The Pixel Pakistan explicitly reports undisclosed financial terms. [3] [8]
The product ended as the mission continued
The official website frames the OpenAI move as a continuation of work on consumer AI. It separately tells users that Jams and Hubble would close and that existing users might receive data-migration instructions. Those details matter for customers: the destination of a team does not ensure that an existing product remains available. The notice does not give a precise shutdown day or describe a migration into an OpenAI product. [1]
The evidence supports an acquired team and discontinued standalone products. It does not support a diagnosis of weak unit economics, poor retention, or a failed fundraise. Revenue, usage cohorts, paid conversion, model costs, and the internal reason for accepting the deal remain unknown. A founder learning from this case should distinguish the documented product insight from an unproven commercial result.
