Overview
Limitless built software and a wearable intended to help people remember and search conversations. Its earlier product, Rewind, recorded computer activity for later search. Meta acquired the company in December 2025. The company stopped new Pendant sales and began winding down Rewind and other non-Pendant features. [1] [2] [3]
The product's value depended on keeping a useful record. That also made consent, access and deletion central: the record could contain sensitive information about the user and other people.
Founding Story
Dan Siroker and Brett Bejcek built an earlier meeting-recording product called Scribe. Andreessen Horowitz said tens of thousands of people used that iteration before the team expanded the idea into Rewind. Its 2022 investment announcement described software for finding things a user had seen, said or heard on a computer. [1]
Rewind sought to make a personal archive searchable. In 2024 the company rebranded as Limitless, adding a meeting assistant and a wearable Pendant to capture in-person conversations. That extended the idea beyond a computer screen and introduced new questions about the people recorded nearby. [2]
Timeline
- 2022: Andreessen Horowitz announced its investment in Rewind; TechCrunch later reported a $10 million round. [1] [2]
- 2024: Rewind became Limitless and announced a meeting suite and conversation-recording Pendant. [2]
- December 5, 2025: Limitless announced its acquisition by Meta and stopped new Pendant sales. [3]
- December 19, 2025: Limitless said an update disabled Rewind screen and audio capture. [3]
- 2026: The company said eligible existing Pendant customers would receive support throughout the year. Its statement does not promise support beyond that period. [3]
What They Built
Scribe indexed meetings. Rewind expanded the record to computer activity, allowing a user to search a personal history. The Limitless suite then used meeting audio and AI-generated notes, while the Pendant offered a way to record conversations away from a computer. [1] [2]
The distinction matters because the products did not all end on the same day. The acquisition notice said the desktop and web apps would no longer record, while eligible existing Pendant customers would continue to receive support through 2026. Users could export or delete their data through the company's tools. Regional access ended earlier in several markets. [3]
Market Position
Target Customers
The products addressed people who wanted to recall meetings and conversations without relying only on handwritten notes. Rewind also targeted computer users seeking a searchable record of on-screen work. For an in-person recorder, other speakers are affected even when they are not the purchaser. [1] [2]
Market Size
Meeting software and workplace AI have broad audiences, but those figures do not establish demand for continuous personal recording or a wearable. Public sources reviewed do not disclose Limitless's paid subscriber count, retention or profitability.
Competition
Meeting transcription tools, manual notes and other recording devices all competed for the same recall problem. They differed in capture scope, storage and consent controls. A participant's ability to see when recording is active and review deletion controls could matter as much as summary quality.
Business Model
TechCrunch reported that the company began accepting orders for a conversation-recording pendant in 2023 and later offered the Limitless meeting suite. The acquisition notice said existing eligible customers would receive the Unlimited plan free and that new Pendant sales had stopped. Those transition terms do not reveal the business's prior profit or the sale price. [2] [3]
Traction
Andreessen Horowitz said the earlier Scribe product reached tens of thousands of users. This is an investor-reported historical user figure for a predecessor product, not a count of Pendant customers or active paying subscribers. [1]
Outcome and evolution
Siroker announced that Limitless had been acquired by Meta. The notice tied the move to Meta's interest in AI-enabled wearables but did not disclose a transaction price. Meta's plans do not establish which Limitless features will appear in a future device. [3] [4]
The company said Rewind capture would be disabled on December 19, 2025. It also promised support for eligible existing Pendant customers throughout 2026 while ending new sales and some regional access. Users faced a transition involving export, deletion and updated terms. The announcement does not establish service availability beyond 2026. [3]
Key Lessons
- A searchable record needs clear boundaries. Users and other participants need to understand when recording happens and how to remove data.
- A product family can have several outcomes. Rewind capture ended while eligible Pendant owners received a limited support period.
- Describe metrics by product and date. Scribe's historical user count does not measure Pendant adoption.
- Plan the exit for customers. Exports, deletion, regional availability and notice matter when a personal archive changes ownership.
