If you only have a few minutes to spare, here’s what investors, operators, and founders should know about Mailmodo (S21).
Mailmodo turned email messages into small applications. Its editor let marketers place forms, surveys, calendars and purchase actions inside the inbox, removing the click to a landing page. Founded in 2020, it joined YC's Summer 2021 batch and raised a $2 million seed round.[1]
The product found real demand, but its original advantage depended on AMP for Email, a standard with uneven client support. Mailmodo responded by broadening into cross-client interactivity, automation and AI. YC now labels the company acquired, yet Mailmodo still sells the product and neither YC nor the company names a buyer, date or deal terms.[2] The outcome is therefore an acquisition label, not a documented transaction.
Aquibur Rahman came to the problem as a marketer. He had led growth at Indian fintech companies and consulted for early-stage startups. He later recalled that email touched every other growth metric, but converting a recipient required too many steps. When Google announced AMP for Email, he saw a way to let people act without leaving the message. "Coding AMP emails is technically challenging and strenuous for email marketers," he told Marketer Interview. "Thus started Mailmodo, a no-code platform for marketers to create actionable and interactive emails."[3]
Rahman built the company with Apurv Gupta and Devyesh, starting during the pandemic. Fundraising was difficult because investors saw a crowded email-service market. The team tested the narrowest claim first: whether reducing the jump from email to web form changed conversion. Rahman told Forbes that an early customer campaign lifted conversion by 250% and that repeated campaigns produced similar results. He framed the larger thesis plainly: "Email is far from dead. It just needs an upgrade."[1]
Mailmodo opened to paying customers in January 2021. By July, the company reported more than 100 customers across several regions and 30% monthly revenue growth. Surge, Sequoia Capital India's scale-up program, led a $2 million seed round with YC participating.[1]
Mailmodo combined an email-service provider with a no-code interactive editor. A marketer could select a template, add an AMP form or widget, connect campaign data, define an audience and send from the same system. Recipients could answer an NPS question, choose a meeting time, submit a lead form or interact with a cart inside supported inboxes.[2]
That workflow attacked a measurable source of loss: every redirect between the message and a landing page gave the recipient another chance to leave. The product also handled the technical details that made AMP hard for a marketing team, including message construction and campaign management.
The wedge carried a constraint. AMP did not work everywhere, and Apple Mail represented a large share of inbox use. In 2024, Rahman acknowledged both the support gap and the burden of creating campaigns. Mailmodo 2.0 answered with Apple Mail interactivity, a new editor, prebuilt sequences and AI copy help.[4] In 2025, Mailmodo AI expanded the scope again, from interactive content to planning, building and analyzing campaigns.[5]
The first customer was a growth marketer who wanted higher conversion but could not hand-code AMP messages. SaaS, fintech and ecommerce teams had frequent campaigns and actions simple enough to complete inside an email.
