Overview
Reflektive made software for employee feedback, goals and performance reviews. Its original idea was to make feedback available in everyday tools such as email and Slack, instead of relying only on an annual review. The product later added check-ins, surveys and analytics.[1] [2]
Learning Technologies Group (LTG) acquired Reflektive in 2021 and integrated it into its PeopleFluent talent software business. LTG's 2021 annual report records $13.7 million in cash consideration. An earlier results statement reported $14.2 million as initial consideration; the figures should not be treated as a venture funding return.[3] [4]

Founding Story
Rajeev Behera, Erick Tai and Jimmie Tyrrell founded Reflektive in 2014. Behera had managed a growing product team at game company Playdom. Investor Lightspeed wrote that his experience with annual reviews and existing human resources tools motivated the new business. That is an investor's account of the company's origin.[5] [6]
In 2016, Behera said many human resources executives struggled with their performance management systems. Reflektive's proposed alternative combined frequent feedback with formal reviews and goals. Its software made prior feedback visible during the review process, helping managers assemble information gathered over time.[2]
Timeline
- 2014: Reflektive launched its employee feedback product.[5]
- 2015: The company announced $3.6 million in seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz.[1]
- 2016: Reflektive raised a $13 million Series A and announced more than 150 customers.[2]
- 2017: It raised $25 million in Series B funding and reported more than 250 customers.[7]
- 2018: A $60 million Series C included follow-on investment from Andreessen Horowitz.[8]
- 2021: LTG completed the acquisition and added the product to PeopleFluent.[3]
What They Built
An employee could send feedback through a tab inside email rather than open a separate review form. Reflektive also worked with Slack. The product evolved into a platform for feedback requests, reviews, goals and one-to-one check-ins. The goal was to make feedback easier to give close to the work it described and easier for a manager to find later.[1] [7]
In 2018, Reflektive acquired Shape to add customizable people analytics and reporting to its product.[15]
The surrounding process mattered as much as the interface. A feedback tool needs employees to use it, managers to act on it and organizations to decide who can see sensitive comments. LTG described the acquired product as a combination of goals, continuous feedback and analytics, sold alongside its broader talent management products.[3]
Market Position
Target Customers
Reflektive sold to organizations that managed employee feedback and reviews.
Market Size
The available sources do not establish comparable market sizes at launch and today.
Competition
Reflektive entered a crowded market for employee engagement and performance software. It sought to stand out by bringing feedback into work tools and by combining it with reviews. Today, 15Five and Lattice offer performance and engagement products; PeopleFluent continues to offer talent management software. These are current alternatives, not evidence of how much market share each had in 2021.[1] [9] [10] [11]
Business Model
Organizations bought Reflektive for their teams. LTG reported that most of Reflektive's approximately $14.2 million in 2020 revenue came from recurring annual and multiyear contracts. The company recorded an approximately $7 million EBITDA loss that year, according to the same unaudited figures. EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization; it is not cash flow or net income.[4]
Traction
Reflektive announced more than 150 customers in 2016 and more than 250 in 2017. In its acquisition announcement, LTG said Reflektive would add more than 450 corporate customers. These counts show reported adoption, not how many employees actively used the product or renewed their contracts.[2] [7] [12]
Outcome and evolution
Acquisition and integration
LTG announced the deal in January 2021 and says it closed in February. Its 2021 annual report records the acquired software, customer relationships and other assets. Reflektive joined PeopleFluent, and its support site still documents recognition workflows.
Financial context
The public financial figures show a business that had paying customers and was losing money before the deal; they do not establish each investor's return or the exact reasons for the sale.[3] [13] [14]
Key Lessons
- Putting feedback inside email can reduce the steps needed to record it, but adoption depends on managers and employees using the process.
- Recurring contracts and a substantial customer base can coexist with operating losses.
- Acquisition consideration, funding raised and investor returns are different figures. The available disclosures do not determine each investor's outcome.
