Overview
Maderight tried to make sourcing overseas clothing manufacturing as simple as booking a service online, and ran into the disintermediation and coordination costs that make apparel-manufacturing marketplaces exceptionally hard. Founded in 2015 in San Mateo and part of Y Combinator's Summer 2015 batch, Maderight connected fashion brands to global factories through a self-serve marketplace, with a focus on ethical, third-party-audited factories (vetted by SGS, Intertek, and Bureau Veritas) and a production expert assigned to oversee each client's manufacturing.[1]
It worked with more than 50 audited factories and promised brands a simpler, more transparent path to production.[2] But the company is now permanently closed.[5] The structural problem is that manufacturing is a high-trust, long-term, deliberately-direct relationship, so a marketplace that pays (via production experts) to establish brand-factory relationships tends to lose them to direct dealing — a disintermediation leak, compounded by the labor intensity of coordinating international apparel production and the instability of fashion-brand customers.
Founding Story
Maderight was founded in 2015 to solve a genuinely painful problem for apparel brands: finding and managing overseas manufacturing.[4] For an emerging fashion brand, sourcing a factory is opaque, risky, and relationship-heavy — you need to find a factory that can make your product at your quality and quantity, trust that it's ethical and reliable, manage samples and revisions across language and time-zone barriers, and handle quality control and shipping. Most small brands lack the connections and expertise to do this well, and bad manufacturing experiences can sink a young company.
Maderight's answer combined a marketplace with a service layer: a self-serve platform to browse and connect with vetted factories, plus a dedicated production expert who oversaw each brand's manufacturing end to end.[2] The ethical-sourcing angle — factories audited by major third-party inspectors — added trust and appealed to the growing demand for sustainable supply chains.[3] The value proposition was real, but the model embedded two hard costs: the per-client production expert made coordination labor-intensive and hard to scale, and the marketplace's core function — connecting brands to factories — created relationships that both sides had every incentive to take direct.
Timeline
- 2015: Maderight founded in San Mateo; joins Y Combinator (S15).[1]
- 2015–2016: Builds a self-serve marketplace of 50+ audited factories with per-client production experts.[2]
- Later: Ceases operations; permanently closed.[5]
What They Built
Maderight was a managed marketplace for apparel manufacturing. A brand could use the platform to find factories matched to its needs, request samples, place production orders, and manage the process, with a Maderight production expert coordinating quality control, communication with the factory, and logistics on the brand's behalf.[2] The audited-factory network gave brands confidence in ethics and quality, addressing real anxieties about overseas production.[3]
The service was genuinely helpful, but its structure was economically difficult. Coordinating apparel production — samples, revisions, minimums, quality inspections, shipping, and defect resolution across international supply chains — is complex and hands-on, so the production-expert-per-client model scaled costs with clients rather than amortizing them. And the marketplace's central act, matching a brand to a factory, produced exactly the kind of relationship that becomes direct: once a brand finds a factory that makes its product well, both parties naturally deal directly for future orders, cutting out the middleman. A marketplace that invests heavily to create relationships it then loses has a fundamental leak.
Market Position
Target Customers
Maderight served emerging and small-to-mid apparel brands needing help sourcing and managing overseas manufacturing — a real need, but a customer base that is itself unstable, since most fashion brands struggle or fail.
Market Size
Apparel manufacturing is an enormous global market, but the marketplace-addressable, small-brand slice is fragmented, low-margin, and characterized by relationships that resist intermediation.
Competition
Maderight competed with traditional sourcing agents, direct factory relationships, and other manufacturing platforms.[6] The decisive competitive dynamic was structural: manufacturing relationships are high-trust and long-term by design, so the value of a middleman is highest at the first match and declines to near zero once the relationship is established. Traditional sourcing agents survive by embedding themselves in ongoing operations, but a self-serve marketplace that facilitates a match is easily bypassed for repeat orders. Combined with the instability of apparel-brand customers and the thin margins of manufacturing coordination, Maderight's competitive position offered no durable hold on the relationships it created.
Business Model
Maderight earned margins on the manufacturing it facilitated and managed, plus the value of its production-oversight service.[2] The economics were pressured from several directions: the per-client production expert was a labor cost that didn't scale, manufacturing margins are thin, and — most critically — the recurring revenue a marketplace needs was undermined by disintermediation, as brands and factories moved to direct relationships after the first successful order. Add the churn of a customer base (small apparel brands) with high failure rates, and the model struggled to build the durable, repeatable revenue required to sustain the business. The company's quiet closure reflects economics that couldn't hold together, not a lack of genuine utility.
Post-Mortem
Manufacturing relationships are built to be direct
The central mechanism is that manufacturing is a high-trust, long-term relationship by nature, so a marketplace's value is concentrated at the first match and erodes to nothing once the brand and factory connect.[2] A brand that finds a reliable factory doesn't want a middleman on every future order; it wants the direct relationship, which is cheaper and closer. Maderight invested heavily — via vetting and per-client production experts — to establish these relationships, then had every incentive working against retaining the recurring revenue from them. This is the disintermediation leak that afflicts service marketplaces, and it is especially severe in manufacturing, where the whole point is a durable, direct partnership.
The production-expert model didn't scale
Coordinating international apparel production is genuinely hard and hands-on, so Maderight assigned a production expert to each client — a real value-add, but a cost that grew with the customer base rather than amortizing across it.[3] High-touch service on thin manufacturing margins, for customers who might bypass you on the next order, is a difficult combination. The quality of the service was part of the problem: it was expensive to deliver and hard to make profitable at scale.
An unstable customer base compounds the difficulty
Maderight's customers were largely small and emerging apparel brands, and the fashion industry is notoriously brutal — most young brands fail or stay tiny.[6] Serving a customer base with high failure rates means constant churn and high acquisition costs, on top of the disintermediation and coordination-cost problems. A marketplace needs stable, repeat customers to build durable revenue, and small apparel brands are among the least stable customer bases in commerce. The combination of leaky relationships, unscalable service, thin margins, and churning customers left no clear path to a sustainable business.
Key Lessons
- Manufacturing relationships are built to be direct. A marketplace's value peaks at the first brand-factory match and erodes to nothing once the relationship forms, so Maderight paid to create relationships it then lost to direct dealing.[2]
- High-touch service on thin margins doesn't scale. The per-client production expert added real value but was a cost that grew with customers rather than amortizing, straining unit economics.[3]
- An unstable customer base compounds every other problem. Small apparel brands fail at high rates, so Maderight faced constant churn and high acquisition costs atop disintermediation and coordination costs.[6]
- Facilitating a match isn't a durable business. To hold manufacturing revenue, a platform must embed in the ongoing relationship (software, operations), not just make the introduction — the introduction is exactly what gets bypassed.[1]
