Seerslab began with a consumer AR camera, then converted its image-processing work into ARGear, an SDK and content platform for smartphone makers, carriers and app developers. The Korean company joined YC in Summer 2016 and later added virtual worlds and AI glasses.[1]
YC marks Seerslab inactive, but that label conflicts with the record. Seerslab posted corporate actions in 2024, reported operating metrics that December and demonstrated new glasses in April 2026.[2][3] This is best read as a company that repeatedly changed product layers, not a verified shutdown.
Michael Chong spent roughly a decade in technology business roles at Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom. He believed mobile communication would move from written messages toward visual media, while large employers remained attached to text. He left and founded Seerslab in May 2014.[4]
The first mass-market answer was Lollicam, an AR camera app launched in 2015. Chong described the strategic problem directly: "If a large company launches a similar service, or puts the same function into the handset, it is difficult to grow an app business without large capital." His answer was proprietary image and AR technology that a handset vendor could not reproduce as quickly.[4]
Lollicam supplied product feedback, content and an installed base, but Seerslab's more durable business became infrastructure. From late 2017, it packaged AR and AI features as ARGear, an SDK for carriers, device makers and application teams.[5] That move exchanged consumer reach for enterprise contracts and put the company underneath other brands.
Chong kept the thesis centered on visual computing. In a 2026 demonstration of Seerslab's AI glasses, he said: "We wanted to see if AI could fit naturally into daily life — like a normal pair of glasses."[3] The product changed from camera effects to SDKs, virtual spaces and wearable AI, while the underlying bet remained the same.
Lollicam let mobile users place animated effects and characters into camera content. That consumer product built the face tracking, rendering and content pipeline later sold through ARGear.
ARGear gave an app team a prepared AR layer rather than asking it to build computer vision, real-time rendering and licensed content from scratch. Seerslab described carrier, handset, commerce and entertainment uses: camera effects, virtual fitting, 5G experiences and character content. A 2019 profile said about 20 application providers, including all three Korean mobile carriers and Samsung and LG devices, used the technology.[5]
The Deutsche Telekom demonstration showed the enterprise motion. Seerslab rendered a virtual version of singer Chungha dancing beside an executive during a 5G press conference. The company also said it had secured Disney character IP, pairing an SDK with content rights rather than selling rendering alone.[6]
The portfolio later widened. MirrorTown let organizations build lower-cost digital-twin spaces, while AInoon and smart glasses applied vision models to everyday assistance. By 2026, the glasses could identify ingredients and suggest recipes through voice interaction.[3]
Seerslab moved from consumers making camera content to companies that needed AR without staffing a full computer-vision team. Carriers, handset makers, commerce apps and entertainment owners could buy both software and content.
