Scope AR is a pioneer of enterprise augmented reality that won marquee industrial customers and still, more than a decade on, illustrates how enterprise AR has been perpetually promising and perpetually stuck. Founded around 2010 and later based in San Francisco (with Canadian roots), the Y Combinator company built AR tools to put knowledge in front of workers exactly where they need it: WorkLink, a platform to author and deliver AR work instructions and 3D/CAD overlays onto real equipment, and Remote AR, a telepresence tool letting a remote expert see a technician's view and annotate it live.[3]
It raised about $11.8 million and signed serious customers — Johnson & Johnson, Mitsubishi, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell.[2] Yet the company appears to have plateaued rather than broken out (our directory data marks it inactive, though its site remains live), which is the recurring fate of enterprise AR. The category's adoption has been gated by two structural constraints largely outside a software vendor's control: immature, expensive AR hardware, and the high cost of authoring AR content for every task — a combination that traps even well-regarded vendors in pilots.
Scope AR was founded around 2010, early enough that it genuinely pioneered enterprise-class augmented reality, and it later went through Y Combinator.[1] The insight was compelling and durable: skilled industrial work — assembling, maintaining, and repairing complex equipment — depends on knowledge locked in manuals and experts' heads, and AR could overlay that knowledge directly onto the physical object a worker is looking at, guiding them step by step. For training, maintenance, and field service, this promised fewer errors, faster work, and less dependence on scarce experts.
The company built two complementary products around this vision: WorkLink for authored, reusable AR instructions, and Remote AR for live expert assistance.[4] The pitch resonated with large industrial and medical-device manufacturers, and Scope AR assembled an enviable customer list.[2] But those logos, impressive as they are, largely represented pilots and departmental deployments rather than enterprise-wide standard tooling — and the gap between an impressive pilot and a scaled rollout is exactly where enterprise AR has struggled for over a decade.
Scope AR's WorkLink let companies author augmented-reality work instructions — step-by-step guidance, animations, and 3D/CAD models superimposed onto the actual equipment through a tablet, phone, or headset — and distribute them to workers who could then follow the instructions hands-on.[3] Remote AR added live human assistance: a remote expert saw the technician's camera feed and drew annotations into their view to guide a repair or assembly in real time.[8]
Both products delivered real value in demonstrations and pilots. But the model carried two heavy costs. First, someone had to author the AR content for each task — a labor-intensive process of building 3D-aligned, step-by-step instructions, which limited how many procedures a company could realistically cover. Second, the best experience required AR hardware — smart glasses or headsets — that remained expensive, uncomfortable, and immature throughout the 2010s, so most usage fell back to phones and tablets, diluting the "hands-free guidance" promise. These constraints made it hard to move from a compelling pilot on a few procedures to enterprise-wide deployment across thousands.
