Actionable insights

If you only have a few minutes to spare, here’s what investors, operators, and founders should know about boitas.com (W21).

  1. The company changed the job three times. Boitas moved from clearing surplus inventory to restaurant procurement and then Excel-generated storefronts. Each version reset the buyer, supplier, and liquidity assumptions.
  2. Thirty-five people did not produce public operating proof. YC records the team size, while revenue, repeat orders, take rate, margin, and customer concentration remain undisclosed. Headcount cannot resolve marketplace health.
  3. The strongest successor keeps existing trade relationships. Choco's current model accepts orders from established supplier relationships and charges distributors for automation. That removes the need to manufacture buyer-seller liquidity.
  4. Mexico now has better workflow primitives. WhatsApp supports in-chat forms, and CFDI 4.0 supplies structured invoice data. A local order-intake product can normalize informal messages without owning stock or delivery.

Overview

Boitas started in Monterrey in 2020 as a wholesale marketplace for returned and slow-moving inventory. It then concentrated on restaurant, hotel, and cafeteria supplies, joined Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch, and described a WhatsApp-based sales tool for small businesses. By late 2022, a Boitas fundraising page pitched a third product: turning one Excel file into a digital storefront.[1][2][3]

The team reached a recorded size of 35, but the public record contains no revenue, gross merchandise value, repeat-order, supplier, or margin data. A February 2023 episode with CEO Raul Maldonado explicitly covered the company's closure. Investor Magma Partners labels Boitas a 2022 seed exit, though no buyer or acquisition announcement was found.[2][4][5]

Founding Story

Raul Maldonado brought a decade of operating experience in China. He had developed and imported products across categories including auto parts, furniture, electronics, and industrial goods. Returned merchandise gave him the first Boitas problem: importers and retailers held obsolete or out-of-season stock with little digital visibility and cash tied up in warehouses.[6][7]

Maldonado and Marcelo Galvan launched Boitas on July 1, 2020. Sellers gave Boitas their excess lots; the company uploaded, promoted, collected, and delivered those goods to merchants and entrepreneurs. Maldonado described the service plainly: “Lo que hacemos es ayudarlos a subir sus productos, publicarlos y promocionarlos en nuestra plataforma de oportunidades.”[1]

The initial catalog was deliberately broad. “Tenemos productos muy variados, desde una liga hasta un avión diría yo,” Maldonado told PRO Network. The ambition was national as well as commercial. When announcing YC, he thanked the people who backed him and Galvan when they had only an idea, then wrote: “Nuestra misión es crear oportunidades comerciales para todos en Mexico!!”[1][8]

Magma names Argenis Leon alongside Maldonado and Galvan on the founding team. YC lists Maldonado and Galvan as former founders and records Boitas as founded in 2020.[2][5]

Timeline

  • July 2020: Boitas launches as a wholesale clearance marketplace for stranded inventory.[1]
  • Winter 2021: The company joins Y Combinator and frames its mission around commercial opportunity for Mexican businesses.[2][8]
  • July 2021: Boitas announces a Tiendanube partnership offering users a free first month and a 25% second-month discount.[9]
  • Late 2021: Founder coverage describes a wholesale marketplace where businesses can buy operating supplies; YC later records a food-service focus and WhatsApp commerce.[6][2]
  • August 2022: A founder interview describes Boitas as helping restaurant owners save time and money on raw materials.[10]
  • November 2022: An Inixar page pitches Excel-generated storefronts for 13 million Latin American SMBs and marks the project closed on November 28.[3]
  • February 2023: Arkangeles publishes an episode devoted to Boitas's closure with Maldonado.[4]
  • Current record: YC lists Boitas inactive; Magma categorizes it as an exit without naming a buyer.[2][5]

What They Built

The first Boitas connected holders of excess inventory with small merchants seeking discounted wholesale goods. Sellers submitted lots. Boitas created listings, promoted them, collected goods, and arranged delivery. The catalog crossed product categories, which let almost any overstock supplier participate.[1]

The second version narrowed the vertical to food service. Restaurants, hotels, and cafeterias could order supplies from a phone or computer. Galvan's YC biography describes technology that automated SMB sales through WhatsApp commerce. An August 2022 podcast framed the buyer benefit as saving restaurant owners time and money on raw materials.[2][10]

The last documented version served a broader set of entrepreneurs, commission sellers, and SMBs. A merchant uploaded one Excel file and received a website with a digital catalog. The Inixar page sought simulated investment reservations from MXN 1 million to MXN 2 million and stated a goal of helping more than 13 million Latin American SMBs.[3]
